The Niagara History Center in Lockport announces the return of the annual “History Explorers” series of four one-day programs for kids 7 to 11 years old. Beginning on July 29th and continuing for the next three Wednesdays, children will be immersed in a hands-on history experience. Each program starts at 10 am and ends at 3 pm. We asked that the children bring a lunch and a drink. A snack, themed to that day’s topic, will be provided in the afternoon. The fee is $30.00 per child, per program. The Town of Lockport Recreation Department is offering $5.00 off coupons in their summer newsletter. The date and themes for this year are:

 Wednesday, July 29th

“Firefighting History Day”

Participate in a relay race to gather equipment needed to put out a “fire”, try your hand at a bucket brigade, make a miniature fire truck and race it on course, learn about some famous Lockport fires, see how fire hydrants work, find out about the man who invented them and make a miniature one to go along with your fire truck.

 Wednesday, August 5th

“Old Time Circus & Carnival Day”

Play carnival games, walk on stilts and a balance beam, learn about Niagara County carousel companies and make a miniature Merry-Go-Round, find out about local people who were in the circus, get your face painted, make balloon animals and watch a magic show.

 Wednesday, August 12th

“Soldiers of the Revolutionary War”

What was it like to be a soldier in the Continental Army 250 years ago? Experience activities common to a soldier at that time, pitch a tent, do a cannonball relay race, make your own patriotic flag, learn about uniforms, make cartridges, drill and march in formation.

 Wednesday, August 19th

“Traitors & Spies of the Revolutionary War”

Discover how the American Revolution was won with the help of spies. Learn about the men, women and people of color were spies during the Revolution, make devices to read and write secret messages, test your memory, find out if you would be a good spy and not get caught.
