The Niagara History Center's FREE Erie Canal Family Fun Day celebrates the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. Parts of the buildings and grounds at the History Center will be set-up as merchants and trades areas where families can learn about different aspects of the Erie Canal and participate in a fun activity. When you arrive, childrern ages 5 to 12 will receive a "Bill of Lading" to be stamped as each activity is completed. These stops will include a general store, a blacksmith and cooper (barrel maker) shop, an apple farmer, an innkeeper, a library "boat" and a surveyor's office. At each stop, there will be game, "make & take" or hands-on activity related to that business for the children to do. When the "Bill of Lading" is complete, each child will do a special additional activity. There will be other fun things to do as well including making a paper toy, trying to find when Sal the Mule is hiding and playing "Pin the Tail on Sal." The activities should take about 45 minutes to one hour to complete. There will be no food or beverage sold at the event and any food or drink brought into the event must be consumed outside and not brought into the historic buidings. Street parking only; there is no parking lot at the History Center.
