February Fun Week at Ganondagan

Experience Native American culture first-hand at Ganondagan’s February Fun Week! Engage in storytelling, Iroquois Social Dancing and Seneca singing, Native American games including bone dice and hand games, a scavenger hunt, make-and-take traditional art activities with paper and clay, learn to hoop dance, and more! On Wed & Fri, make and take home a stuffed animal in “Furry Friends and Tales.” (Pre-registration and a separate fee required.) Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Daily Activities are as follows:

Tuesday, February 19th
Make & Take: Paper Beads Ganondagan is full of evidence of Seneca people re-using items such as re-making old brass kettles into new jewelry. In that tradition come and make your own window ornament or necklace from paper beads made from recycled magazines and calendars. Appropriate for 2nd grade and up. 2 sessions offered: 10 AM & 3 PM
Hand Game: For centuries, tribes all over the American continent have played guessing games. This is an intertribal game that has many variations. Participants are divided into groups, and the team with the most points wins. Fun for the whole family! 2 sessions offered: 11:30 AM & 2 PM
Gallery Scavenger Hunt, Wampum Learning Center, & Whitetail Deer Table will be available from 10 AM-4 PM

Wednesday, February 20th
Make & Take: 3 Sisters Participants will learn about the importance of The Three Sisters (corn, beans, and squash) and then will make their own paper version of the crops. Appropriate for ages 5 and up. 2 sessions offered: 10 AM & 3 PM
Hoop Dance: Participants will learn the basic skills and moves for hoop dancing. This is appropriate for 4th grade and up. 2 sessions offered: 11:30 AM & 2 PM
Furry Friends & Rabbit Tales: Participants will hear Native American stories related to the rabbit and then build their own 16" plush brown rabbit to bring home. Appropriate for 2nd grade and up or younger with parent assistance. Pre-registration required- $18 for General Public, $15 for Friends of Ganondagan Members. 1 session 1 PM
Gallery Scavenger Hunt, Wampum Learning Center, & Whitetail Deer Table will be available from 10 AM-4 PM

Thursday, February 21st
Make & Take: Clay Animals Participants will hear Native American animal stories and then will make their own miniature animal out of clay. Appropriate for 2nd grade and up. 2 sessions offered: 10 AM & 3 PM
Bone Dice Game: Iroquois version of the bone dice games uses eight antler dice cut into pieces. This game is played in teams and is a game of chance. Fun for the whole family! 2 sessions offered: 11:30 AM & 2 PM

Friday, February 22nd
Make & Take: "Beaded" Bags Participants will learn about bead work and "sew" a  paper version of a 19th century antique bead work bag . Appropriate for ages 5 and up. 2 sessions offered: 10 AM & 3 PM
Seneca Singing: This workshop gives students a hands on experience with Seneca Social Dance songs. Students will use horn rattles to accompany a lead singer and will learn the history and lyrics of actual Seneca songs. Appropriate for 4th grade and up.  2 sessions offered: 11:30 AM & 2 PM
Furry Friends and Beaver Tales: Participants will hear Native American stories related to the beaver and then build their own 16" plush beaver to bring home. Appropriate for 2nd grade and up or younger with parent assistance. Pre-registration required- $18 for General Public, $15 for Friends of Ganondagan Members. 1 session 1 PM
