Activity Descriptions:
Sailing
Students will learn the safety and basics of sailing in BMC’s historic, wooden sailboats, as well as the history of commercial fishing on Lake Erie and the boatbuilding skills that were used and adapted for vessels of today’s recreational and commercial industries.
Paddling
Students in the BMC Camp will experience a day on the water in canoes. They will learn how to create a float plan, analyze weather patterns and safe paddling routes, and several paddle strokes to maneuver a canoe. There are options for students to learn about recovering back into a boat during a planned rescue. In addition to paddling, students will get a tour of SUNY Buffalo State’s Great Lake Station and learn aspects of fish and wildlife native to NYS aquatic ecosystems.
Canoe Paddles
Students will design and start to shape their own wooden canoe paddle from a blank piece of Basswood. Students will start the project and be encouraged to visit the BMC in the fall to finish. At the end of the program, students will own their own canoe paddle which becomes a free pass to boat rentals at Hoyt Lake.
