6 First Day Hikes at Letchworth State Park!

Whether you want to see the first sunrise of 2023, take a guided hike with a park naturalist or go on a self guided walk - there's a perfect First Day Hike for you and your family. Celebrate the New Year enjoying the Grand Canyon of the East!

Archery Field Overlook Sunrise Hike (7 am): Witness the first sunrise of 2023 from Archery Field Overlook, the breathtaking "Grand Canyon of the East" view at Letchworth State Park. This easy hike on mostly-level ground offers wonderful views and great photo opportunities. Due to the possibility of temporary road closures for winter weather, please use the Castile gate at 6787 Denton Corners Road, Castile, NY. Trout Pond Loop (10 am): Hike a loop around Trout Pond, the human-enhanced wildlife habitat, fishing pond, and water source for the fountain at the Glen Iris Inn. Experience the hushed, densely fern-covered pine woods in their winter slumber beside the beautiful pond. Due to the possibility of temporary road closures for winter weather, please use the Castile gate at 6787 Denton Corners Road, Castile, NY. Highbanks Trail Guided Hike (10 am): Enjoy a guided hike on the Highbanks Trail with great views of the Mount Morris canyon. The Hogsback Overlook provides great views of one of the park's most dramatic geological features. Enter the Mount Morris gate, near 130 North Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510. Waterfalls Hike (10:30 am): Join us for a hike to Middle Falls and Upper Falls, two of Letchworth State Park's largest waterfalls. This easy hike over mostly flat surfaces offers incredible views and explores exotic trees, as well as state and national champion trees, plus the Glen Iris fountain, known to some as the "Ice Volcano" in the winter. Mount Morris Dam Hike (1 pm): See the Mount Morris Dam as only a winter hiker can, with hard-to find views exposed by bare trees. Hear stories of the creation of the Mount Morris Dam and its importance to communities on the Genesee River, including some of the most productive farmland in New York and the City of Rochester.
