Make Your own two-row wampum bracelet!

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

If you've ever admired wampum beads, or jewelry, Friends of Ganondagan is offering two wampum bracelet-making workshops! Instructors are wampum belt maker Rich Hamell and Friends of Ganondagan Program Assistant and jewelry maker Aimee Carpenter (Seneca).

While learning how to make the bracelets, you'll hear more about the significance of wampum belts with their traditional purple and white beads. The quahog clam’s distinctive shell yields the purple beads, and various whelk species are used to create the white wampum. Traditionally, wampum is used to signify the importance or the authority of the message associated with it. As such, treaties and other such agreements would have a large amount of wampum that had been loomed into a “belt” for them.

Each class is limited to 12 participants, so anyone interested is encouraged to register early.
