Tale for Two: Kids reading to animals!

If you are looking for a fun and interesting way to engage your child/children in reading, we have a program for you. Our Tale for Two reading program pairs your child with a furry animal friend. Did you know that animals make great listeners? Research shows that when children read to animals it can increase their confidence and reading skills. You can sign up for in person OR virtual reading sessions! Virtual reading will take place on a Zoom call; a shelter representative will help the registered child select the animal he or she would like to read to, and the virtual session will conclude with an opportunity for the child to ask the shelter representative questions about the animal or the SPCA

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately.

In effort to help keep our community stay safe while continuing to help our youth improve their literacy skills, our Tale for Two program is back. Now that school is back in session let our animals help with learning engagement and any potential learning loss. We have an innovative way for kids to still benefit from reading to nonjudgmental listeners while at home. Kids can now read to a Paws for Love friend, one of our animal ambassadors or shelter animal waiting for adoptions from their living room. Don’t underestimate the power of an animal visit - even if it's over Zoom! This program will benefit all those involved, children can practice their reading in a safe and fun environment and the animals are soothed by the gentle, rhythmic sound of the child’s voice as they read books aloud! Note: There will be limited space available each week for in-person reading sessions at the shelter.
