BYC Junior Sailing Program
Our Sailing program here in Buffalo grew out of the initiative to share the sport of sailing with the WNY community. We offer lessons to our community because we believe that sailing builds character and resolve. The Buffalo waterfront provides the perfect playground for kids and adults to enjoy sailing. The purpose of the program is to encourage young people to have a lifelong involvement in sailing and the sailing community by promoting seamanship, sportsmanship, and small boat handling skills. The program provides an enjoyable experience that fosters camaraderie, strong friendships, and an enduring interest in sailing—and actively involving youth in the sailing traditions of the Buffalo Yacht Club.
CLASSES OFFERED:
Beginner Prams (Ages 6 – 8 years old):
In this course, we teach the basics of rigging, boat handling, and fundamentals of sailing as well as sportsmanship and water safety all done in Prams coached by a US Sailing Certified Coach.
Adventure Sail (Ages 8 – 14 years old):
In our Adventure Sail program, campers sail in Prams, J/22’s & FJ’s. This program is designed for sailors who love to be on the water and want to sail a multitude of different sailboats but don’t want to be intensely focused on racing. Campers in this class will be instructed by a US Sailing Certified Coaches.
Intro to Racing (Ages 11 – 15 years old):
For Intro to Racing, our campers sail in FJ’s, expanding on their knowledge and experience and eagerness to learn racing. This class offers the opportunity to travel to Interclub regattas and compete with and against other teams. This course is coached by US Sailing Certified coaches with race team experience.
Race Team (Ages 13 – 17 years old):
Racers sail in FJ’s & 420’s. These sailors have experience and want to expand their knowledge of racing. This class offers many opportunities to travel to regattas, Interclub regattas, and compete with and against some of the best sailors in the Western NY. Sailors are led by a highly experienced US Sailing Certified race team coach.
