Workshops will be held on Saturday, August 21st from 11-1pm and Saturday September 25th from 11-1pm. Both workshops will take place in the Bruce Museum Education Workshop, and on Zoom.

In this workshop, participants will use the live dart frogs on display in “Amazon: Beauty, Destruction, Hope” as their inspiration. Using a mix of mediums including watercolor, matte medium, powdered pigments, and scrap paper, students will explore the at times flashy and at times camouflaged world of dart frogs.

During this two-hour workshops, participants will explore creating three-dimensional shapes in two-dimensional media, use different powdered pigments and matte mediums to attain the glossy and iridescent tones of butterflies and dart frogs, explore the creation of rich, subtle and layered colors, use a variety of mediums to create a composite image, use watercolor for their backgrounds and create paper frames.

Dr. Flax has been teaching painting workshops at the Bruce for the last three years and loves the focus on natural forms and shapes that these workshops provide. A practicing artist for the last 50 years, Dr. Flax brings a unique aesthetic sensibility to her lessons and is excited to continue exploring form and structure.
