Learning activities such as games, finger plays, free play, painting, and stories encourage children to listen, construct, move, and interact while developing language, numeration, and social skills. The program fosters creativity and questioning and allows children to make independent choices. I have sent all three of my children to BNS and have been so very pleased with the program. It is also a wonderful way to meet people from the community!

Children’s Garden of Farmington
1780 Rochester Road State Rt 332
Farmington, NY 14425
(585)398-2450
Note from reader: My son has attended Children's Garden of Farmington for two days each week since its beginning in December 2007. We love it and have increased from half days to full days. The program offers very loving teachers and lots of hands-on Art, books and an amazing blocks area. We were looking for a program that wasn't a "baby college" so my son doesn't waste his time by sitting and listening to a self-important teacher (we tried several of those eplaces) when he can learn through meaningful play instead. We will be putting him in full days next Fall once he turns four. They are just terrific!
Note from reader: The experiences that my child has had since starting at Children's Garden of Farmington is truly amazing and a breath of fresh air. She's able to explore, be creative and have fun. Because of the encouragement by the highly dedicated staff, my daughter is happier and is learning more than I could have hoped for. She often times doesn't want to leave! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and tailor made for children (something you don't often find in "other" schools). I'm so thankful to everyone at Children's Garden of Farmington.

Irondequoit, NY 14617
(585) 467-8730
Note from reader: Christ the King Preschool offers classes for 3- and 4-year-old children. I highly recommend this program as it offers a great variety in academic learning, including art, gym, music, and computers once a week for the 4-year-old group. My second child will be starting this program this September and I know that I could not have made a better choice for my children to begin their early years of education. Christ the King offers not only a wonderful learning experience but also instills a warm, caring Christian atmosphere. The teachers and staff are just incredible and the school promotes and welcomes parent involvement. My oldest will be in fourth grade this year and Christ the King has offered him more than we ever anticipated.

A great place for social learning and development to prepare them for kindergarten, I am blessed to have all 3 of my children attend the school.

Cobblestone School
10 Prince Street
Rochester, NY 14607
(585) 271-4548
Note from reader: Our son is attending kindergarten at Cobblestone School this year. We chose the school after visiting many places and could not be happier! He adores his teacher who is very gentle and caring. The curriculum is very interesting (even for us!) and engaging for the children, it is woven into themes that connect all areas (art, math, reading, movement etc.) The small class size (limited to 12) allows for lots of nurturing and close peer relationships. Children are challenged by being placed in skill-appropriate groups for reading and math. The days are filled with physical activity: outside time every day, gym twice a week, yoga weekly (which the children absolutely love) as well as creative movement, dance, rope-jumping throughout the day. Our son really enjoys music twice a week as well as Spanish. Cobblestone has a full-day preschool and grades K-8. It is affordable compared to other private schools (tuition is about half) and financial aid is available. I wish I went to a school like Cobblestone!

Creative Environment Day Care
28 Main Street
Macedon, NY 14502
315-986-8176
Note from reader: I toured many day care facilities all over Rochester, NY before finding this one....the only one that truly wowed me for its overall facility, classrooms, playrooms, cleanliness, directors, board, staff, programming, and level of care and learning. It is truly an amazing place and I can't say enough wonderful things about it. Regardless of where you live it is worth the drive.
Note from reader: My son has attended Creative Environment since he was about 6 months old. The level of education has been exceptional! The children receive wonderful encouragement to reach their milestones, and tender support all along the way. The school is walking distance from the Pal-Mac elementary school and the library, with weekly trips for reading. My son has made so many great friends, who he talks about all the time, and loves his teachers. I am so glad I chose Creative Environment for my son's day care and preschool!!!

Creekside Nursery School
27 N. Main St
Honeoye Falls, NY 14472
(585) 624-3660
Note from reader: Creekside Nursery School has been in existence for 15 yrs; their philosophy is "learning through play." 3-year-olds are separate from 4-year-olds so each can focus on the age appropriate learning styles and pace. Their pre-K curriculum provides components in letter/number/color/shape recognition, writing, science projects, music, story time, playing in centers, sensory table, etc.
Note from reader: My daughter attended Creekside for the 3's and 4's class, and I could not be happier with how well-prepared she was to enter Kindergarten this past fall. Ms. Gigi is absolutely the most loving, caring, and enthusiastic teacher I have ever met, and the children are given an incredible variety of activities, field trips, art-projects, etc. I could not believe how much cool stuff my daughter would bring home each week! The curriculum is somewhat academic (especially in the 4's class), in that they expose the children to most everything they will see in Kindergarten, but it is done in a fun, non-pressuring way, and the kids still have plenty of time for play and socialization. I HIGHLY recommend Creekside, and look forward to sending my son there this coming fall!

East Palmyra Christian School
2023 E. Palmyra-Pt. Gibson Road
Palmyra, NY 14522
315-597-4400
Email: epcsmail@rochester.rr.com
Notes from reader: Wonderful Christian based Pre-K program with loving environment to learn and pray. Children are enriched by the caring, gentle teacher. Parent participation encouraged and welcomed.

Notes from reader: We were very pleased! The teacher provides a nurturing atmosphere with lots of hands-on learning, field trips, music, and a strong emphasis on pre-reading skills. Children are taught that they are special because they are created by God, and that God wants them to treat each other with kindness and love. The pre-kindergarten class meets two afternoons a week, and the price is very reasonable.

Ellwanger-Barry Cooperative Nursery School
4 East Henrietta Road
Rochester, NY 14620
(585) 461-4250
Notes from reader: We currently have our son enrolled in Ellwanger-Barry Co-op nursey school. It is a co-op in which the parents are heavily involved in the school's activities. Also I can't say enough about the teacher... she is fabulous. It is located at 4 E. Henrietta Rd at the South Presbyterian Church.
Notes from reader: Our daughter is an alumni of EBNS and our son is currently attending. There are so many postive aspects of the program. The classes are small (maximum 12 children), the facility is wonderful and most importantly the teacher is fantastic. It fully prepared our daughter for kindergarten without forcing academic rigor. I would highly recommend EBNS for families that have the ability to spend time in the classroom and participate in their child's pre-school years.
Notes from reader: My son is currently attending Ellwanger Barry as a 3-year-old. It has been a wonderful introduction to school for him, with a gentle compassionate teacher who is skilled at helping children problem solve and explore the world. The children do many hands-on activities (cider making, trips to Eastman House and Nature Centers, learning how syrup is made, etc). This program also provides events and activities for the whole family to enjoy together.

Faith Child Care and Nursery School

Gates-Chili Cooperative Nursery School
3285 Buffalo Road
Rochester, NY 14624 (Gates)
(585) 234-1643

Notes from reader: Our family has been a part of the Gates-Chili Cooperative Nursery School for the past 5 years. Our three children love the school, teachers and learning environment. As a parent, I have enjoyed being a part of the preschool experience by being able to be a parent helper in the classroom and actually seeing our children blossom. This preschool has been in existence for over 40 years and I can see it continuing through many years with its philosophy of learning through play. I highly recommend this preschool.
Notes from another reader: We are a first year family at GCCNS, and are just thrilled with the learning environment. Small class sizes, experienced and qualified teachers, and the opportunity to participate in the classroom are just a few of the reasons why. There are many families there who have enrolled all of their children through the years. They offer parent helping and non parent helping opportunities, but it is absolutely wonderful to be able to be involved and watch your children learn and thrive. Don't let the name fool you, it's for all residents, not just those residing in Gates or Chili. I could sing the praises of this pre-school forever, but after just one year, it has confirmed my belief that we made the right choice for our child. Super place and highly recommended!

Certified Preschool Teacher, NYS Licensed Daycare
Note from reader: I highly recommend Heidi House Preschool—a home daycare in East Irondequoit. For kids 2 - 12. Heidi, the owner of the preschool, is one of the most caring and charismatic people I have ever meet. My kids who absolutely love her have been with her ever since she opened two years ago. It was very apparent to me how much my children excelled in HHP when they started Kindergarden. Both of my children were ahead in number and letter recognition, reading, writing and life experiences. Heidi has memberships to the local museums, takes the kids out to lunch and frequents playgrounds. A great school!

My daughter went there last year and now my 3 year old is there and will be there again next year. The teacher is what makes the school so special. She is INCREDIBLE! I can't say enough great things about her. She is very patient, has excellent ideas and incorporates learning into play like nobody I've ever seen.

Note from reader: ICNS is a small family oriented, play based preschool that has so much to offer. Mrs. Michelle is a great teacher, who completely loves the kids and what she does. She has such a wide range of things for the kids to do and truly cares about the children. My second child will be finishing preschool this year and I've already signed my 2-year-old up for next fall."

Email contact: foxtabb@aol.com
Note from reader: Temple Beth El's preschool, Keshet, is a wonderful, Jewish based preschool. The teachers are nurturing, warm, intelligent, creative and energetic.
Note from reader: Another delighted Keshet parent! Our daughter just finished Keshet’s three-day program, and absolutely loved it; had we known about their two-day program for two-year olds, this would have been her second year with them instead of her first! The program is appropriate for families of just about all levels of “Jewishness,” including our non-practicing-but-culturally-aware family. We are looking forward to her attending their five-day program this coming autumn.

Note from reader: I found this school to be truly innovative in its program. They really work with your children on an individual basis, communicating with parents and providing the tools to encourage a child's development at home as well as at school.
Another note from reader: My oldest child went to this facility for pre-k and we were very pleased with the program and teachers. We had my youngest son enrolled in two pre-schools and decided to send him to Lakeside because of our previous experience. And we have no regrets. The same two teachers and two volunteers that were there for my oldest son are still there and we are extremely pleased with the attention and learning experiences they provide to the children. The teachers are not hesitant to let parents know of any problems in a very nice way and will work with you to solve them.

My husband and I look forward to the days we are scheduled to help in the classroom. Montessori School of Rochester
220 Idlewood Road
Rochester, NY 14618
585-256-2520
Note from reader: The school follows the Montessori philosophy. There is also the option for wraparound day care in the school. The teachers are very caring and really individualize their attention to the child. The beauty about the philisophy is that kids progress at their own pace to bigger and harder activities. Attention is given to geography, math, language etc. There are also enrichment classes in music, Spanish and art.
Note from reader: My three children have been to MSR, from the Toddler program (18 month to 3 years old) to the Primary program (3-6 years old). The Montessori philosophy is based on fostering independence and self-confidence. It is also based on individual work (to develop at your own pace) as well as interaction between ages (the oldest children "teach" the younger ones and develop a sense of responsibility as well as a huge confidence in their abilities). The Montessori school is a secular, multi-ethnic, multi-nationality school and the children also learn through their different cultures. It is located off Westfall Road (in the Brighton Rec building) or off Winton.

Note from reader: It's an integrated pre-school - many children attend a half day of preschool and get help with speech and occupational therapy and social skills. A lot of other children just enjoy the preschool setting and attend all day. The teachers are wonderful, and they include teachers with speech therapy and early childhood education degrees.

Ogden Community Pre-School

(585) 617-6174
Classes offered for 2-5 year olds. Packets available at http://www.ogdenny.com/TownGovernment/Recreation/PreSchool
Note from reader: My daughter attends the Ogden Community Center Preschool and we are very happy with the teachers, curriculum, and the facility. She started last year with the 3-year-old class, and this year has continued with the 4/5-year-olds. She has learned so much since she started, and has grown in many ways. The teachers are exceptional!!!
Note from reader: Our daughter has been part of the Town of Ogden Preschool since September. She's four. We have nothing but wonderful things to say. We love that she has a small class size and individual attention. She likes going in the afternoons and comes home and tells us how much fun she has. The activities and field trips are wonderful. This year they went to Stokoe Farms and had a wonderful time. They just made corn soup for Thanksgiving and she was excited to tell us how it was made. Our daughter loves her teachers and has improved a lot with her social skills. She's always been shy and has really gotten good about talking to other kids and with adults instead of shying away. She comes home with her letter papers and is so proud that she learned how to write a new letter. We are very pleased with the Town of Ogden's Preschool program. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in a caring, thoughtful and educational program.
Note from reader: I give a hearty and heartfelt thumbs up to the Ogden Nursery School, located in the Town of Ogden Building. Peter O’Brien is the director, and what a great job he does. He appears to have a genuine interest in the recreation department and he is approachable and hands on. I also cannot say enough nice things about the two teachers who run the program, Dennise Webster and Sandi Liebow. Truly, they take their jobs very seriously and are phenomenal with the kids. My son is an ‘alum’ and currently in kindergarten and his teacher tells me how well prepared he is – a testimony to only one year with the nursery school! My daughter is now in the 3-year-old class and is happy and eager every school day (wish I could bottle that!). I will be sad when she enters kindergarten, as I would take the Ogden teachers with us if I could.
Note from reader: My daughter is currently enrolled in the 4 year program at the Ogden Community Center. This is her second year in the program. The teachers are amazing. I am thrilled with the quality of care they provide in a safe, fun environment. I would highly recommend!
Note from reader: Awesome! The Little Red Schoolhouse is an excellent preschool for children ages 2-5 years old. My husband and I are extremely pleased with our children's progress since attending this program. The highly experienced teachers have created a warm, happy and secure learning environment while teaching all of the readiness skills for entering kindergarten. During the year, we go on many educational field trips and have many themed activities involving the parents as well. My kids loved the teachers, preschool friends, and especially the outdoor playground area. We are so happy we chose this school!!

I've seen a huge improvement in both girls that we know Parma Free had a lot to do with it! The best is they have programs for 2's, 3's, 4's, and 5's!

Pearce 4 Kids
4322 Buffalo Rd
North Chili, NY 14514
585-594-1833
Pearce 4 Kids Nursery School and Pre-K provide a Christian environment where children are led in their transition from home to school life.

Note from reader: I have enrolled my children in Pearce 4 Kids preschool for 3 consecutive years, and I highly recommend this preschool to others. Pearce 4 Kids preschool offers children a loving and well-equipped environment within which to learn. I personally appreciate the teaching staff and their expertise as they make learning interesting and fun for the children...Pearce 4 Kids preschool offers children a great opportunity to learn social skills and academic skills as they prepare for the elementary school years to come.
Note from reader: My older son attended the nursery school pre-school program. My younger son now attends daycare at Pearce and will continue with daycare and preschool in the Fall. What I really love about Pearce are all of the resources on-site. The facility has a gym, rec room, library, kitchen, multiple playgrounds and easy access to the college campus. Since the college is growing rapidly, there is always a construction site for the kids to visit--and what little kid doesn't love a dump truck and backhoe!

Penfield United Methodist PreSchool
1795 Baird Rd
Penfield, NY 14526
(585) 381-3190
Note from reader: I have been extremely pleased with their program! They have the traditional 3- and 4-year-old programs, but they also offer a 2-year-old "Tiny Tots" program and a Pre-K program. The tuition is more reasonable than other area pre-schools and the student-to-teacher ratio is excellent. I knew as soon as I walked in that I wanted to send my children here!
Note from reader: We love the Penfield United Methodist Preschool. Our daughter spends two days in another day care, and also attends this preschool. We are amazed at how much more she learns in preschool vs. day care (despite the fewer hours). The teachers are very enthusiastic and energetic!

Our son grew so much over the past 9 months and is now really ready for school. Class size is small (14) with two teachers. The environment is fun, loving, and very nurturing!

Perinton Nursery School
2 Mountain Rise
Fairport, NY 14450
Phone: 585-223-9549

Note from reader: We had our daugther enrolled in Perinton Nursery School last year in the 3-year-old class and wouldn't consider sending her anywhere else this year. Since it is a cooperative nursery school I had a lot of opportunities to be involved in her classes (very enjoyable), meet her preschool friends and their parents. The facility is bright and beautiful. The teachers have well planned out days and terrific projects that help the children grow and feel good about themselves.
Another note from reader: Both of my daughters attended Perinton Nursery School. It was a wonderful experience for the entire family....It really is a great preschool. It was with mixed emotions that I watched my youngest graduate from preschool in May. I was thrilled that she would be moving onto the next stage, but sad that I would no longer be a part of the Perinton Nursery School family.
Another note from reader: I personally have enjoyed working in the classroom, getting to know all of my daughter's classmates and their parents. It truly is a supportive community for all of our children.

From PCNS: Since 1952, PCNS has provided preschool children and their parents the opportunity to share their first school experience and to build special friendships. At PCNS, we are committed to nurturing the unique assets of each child during the preschool years by combining professional teaching with parent participation. We are pleased to announce our new "Plan C" option for 2007 which permits parents who are unable to assist in the classroom to still be part of our cooperative school.     Note from reader: The teachers are very kind and caring, and the parents opportunity for involvement is great! The emphasis is that learning comes through play. Therefore, the environment is fun, supportive, and interesting, while still being educational.

1900 Westfall Road
Rochester, New York 14618
585-271-1510
Note from reader: Play Time Preschool is designed specifically for 2- and 3-year-olds, and the teachers are incredibly creative at coming up with fun, enriching activities for children of this age. My daughter was a student there for two years and I never had to coax her to attend. Mary and Becky have wonderful personalities for working with very young children--I found the environment they created to be very positive and nurturing. It is an ideal "first school" for the young preschooler.

All three of my children have benefited from the caring environment provided by these wonderful teachers. This Pre-K is fantastic! It exceed my expectations in every way...and most importantly my son loved it and learned so much that he is now ready for kindergarten!

Rochester Preschool Parent Program
Located at 18 sites throughout Rochester
585-328-3360
Operates 33 groups at 18 sites, 17 schools and 1 YMCA with a group size of 16-20 children. Combines educational group experiences for 4-year-olds (and combined 4's and 3's) with weekly educational group sessions for the parent or surrogate parent. Open to any city resident family at no cost to parents.
Note from reader: My child attended for two years. It is a wonderful program that focuses on working with the parent as the first and primary teacher of the young child. Each site has a parent group that meets once a week during class time where parent issues and information important to our children are discussed.
Note from reader:If a parent cannot do it, a friend or family member can do it for them.
Note from reader:My youngest daughter attended this program as a 3- and then as a 4-year-old. I found the staff to be very well versed on what is developmentally appropriate. There are opportunities for parents to work (as a paraprofessional, for pay) in their child's classroom. It was a refreshing change from my experiences elsewhere.

Note from reader: They offer preschool programs for 2, 3, and 4 year olds. Their teachers are very welcoming and the curriculum is age appropriate. It is located in the John Calvin Presbyterian Church on Ward Hill Road in Rush, but the program is not a religious one. I highly recommend Rush Nursery School.
Note from reader: My children love Rush Nursery School!!!! My boys have grown to love school and are ready and excited about continuing their education. As a parent and a kindergarten teacher, I highly recommend Rush Nursery School for its nurturing, fun, and developmentally appropriate program!

Sensational Kids
Fabulous Fours Pre-K
20 East Church Street
Fairport, NY 14450
Contact: Stacy Cougle, 585-377-8172
Note from reader: My son absolutely loved the fun, creative activities and the kind, caring teachers. My husband and I were thrilled with the academically rich program, which covered not only the basic skills required for Kindergarten admission, but was also enriched with social skills, beginning Spanish and sign language, art, science, math, language, movement and music. I would highly recommend this Pre-K program to parents, who are looking for a creative, thorough, academically fun program. We could not have asked for a better introduction to education for our son.     Another note from reader: It is a unique and highly diversified program, emphasizing academic development, social interactions, language development and the creative arts. My daughter has benefitted from the small class sizes (6:1) unique to this program which allowed for very individualized attention. Included in the curriculum for this PreK program is Math, Science, Sign Language, Spanish, Music, Movement, Drama, and Art. It is clear that the director has spent countless hours researching and preparing this environment, and our children are allowed to "soak up" every opportunity presented to them. I would highly recommend this for parents searching for a quality education - it is the foundation to develop a love of learning!

St. Agnes Preschool
60 Park Place
Avon, NY 14414
585-226-2100

Note from reader: My son attended the 4 year old program and my daughter just finished with the 3 year old. They both LOVED it. There is considerable parent involvement, which helps to create a very tight knit "community" for not only the children, but also the parents. There is a parent volunteer in the classroom every day. Mrs. Zhe, who has been the Preschool teacher for more than a decade, is loving and nurturing, but also strict enough that the kids respect her and learn to follow classroom rules. My children adore her! They offer a morning program for 3 year olds on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-11:30. 4 year-old classes are offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the morning from 9-11:30 and in the afternoon from 12:30-3.

Class sizes are kept small and manageable and each student receives a great deal of individual attention.     Note from reader: Both of my kids have gone there and they're fantastic! My son loves going there and cried when we told him he was going to kindergarden next year. The activities are fun, creative and educational. Classes are small, and 3- and 4-year-old classes are separate. It is a great program at a great price.
Note from reader: My daughter is currently in the 3 year old class at St. Mark's Lutheran Preschool. We are so pleased with the program that they offer. The teachers are caring and compassionate. The nursery school has a lot of space with several rooms for unstructured play, projects, sand/water table, kitchen, stage and outdoor playground. The teachers are caring and well-versed in open-ended exploration, promoting emergent reading and love of reading and writing. Students from SUNY Geneseo participate as readers to the students on a one-to-one basis. Parents are always welcome to participate. Our son is encouraged to develop his social skills. We would give our highest recommendation to this school and will send our other children there.

Email: spxdcs@dor.org
Note from reader: We looked around at several preschools in the area prior to his 3rd birthday. We liked this one the best because as part of the children’s weekly schedule they go to gym class, the library to get a book each week, and to music class. There is a 2 day program for 3-year-olds and a 3 day program for 4-year-olds. In addition, we are not catholic and feel very comfortable with the setting of the preschool and what the children are being taught. We are planning to send our younger son there next year as well.

Stepping Stones Learning Center
41 Colebrook Drive
Rochester, NY 14617
(585) 467-4567
Fax: (585) 467-6973
Note from reader: They have great cooperative programs for ages 1-4, I believe, and it is a very fun, play-oriented, nurturing place!
Note from reader: Stepping Stones Learning Center is an outstanding preschool for children with and without special needs. The two groups are integrated so well that an observer can't tell which kids are which. The benefit to special needs kids is obvious, but the "normal" kids benefit from all of the additional supports in place as well. The teachers are caring, professional and highly trained. It has been an excellent first schoolfor my son!
Note from another reader: Stepping Stones Learning Center is a wonderful place that provides many great opportunities for all children. They have OT, PT, speech, music therapy, ABA, and a Relationship-based Autism Program all provided in the home (birth-5) or in a classroom (ages 18 mos.-5) AND classrooms are integrated with a ratio of no more than 8 children with special needs to approximately 10 typical children. You really cannot tell which children are which, with the wonderful job the teachers and assistants do! They are NAEYC-accredited and all teachers are certified, most with Masters Degrees and years of experience! Your child, whether they have special needs or not, will definitely grow and learn in this caring environment! They run the entire agency with donations from families, staff, and the community! Everything from snacks for the children to desk chairs for the office staff is donated! Amazing! These are folks who are obviously not "there for the money" but rather, there for the kids!

Note from reader: We have been extremely pleased with the school's approach to early childhood education. The beautiful materials combined with exactly the right amount of instruction and monitoring has let our children flourish and learn in a peaceful, free atmosphere that clearly cherishes children and their growth.

Located next to Brighton High School, it offers an “Adventure in Living and Learning for Preschoolers.” The program is non-denominational and developmentally appropriate for 3, 4, and 5 year old children. Emphasis is placed on learning through play and discovery. The Twelve Corners Nursery School has been educating preschoolers for 50 years.
Note from reader: I recommend the Twelve Corners Preschool, which is located in the basement of the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church in Brighton.
Note from reader: Twelve Corners Nursery School in Brighton is wonderful! The play-based curriculum is creative and educational. My daughter is fully enjoying her nursery school experience.

University of Rochester Kindercare Center
55 Castleman Road
Rochester, NY 14620
(585) 273-3677
Note from reader: The center is fabulous, with extremely well trained and caring teachers. The focus on daycare as an educational experience, rather than just keeping the kids occupied, makes it a great environment. They teach the kids without forcing them into a grade school mode (except as they enter kindergarten), allowing lots of free play and exploration, while exposing the kids to things they will experience in school, such as reading constantly, and organized games and activities/projects.
Note from a reader with a somewhat different perspective: My child was at Kindercare for 2 years and although the teachers were caring, we were not happy with the facilities. First, the management was not very approachable to our problems. Second, kids hardly went out during winter (although center claimed they did) and there are no indoor large motor play areas. Finally, books, toys and materials were not as new or as diverse as one would expect giving the money we paid every month.
Note: This preschool is restricted to employees of the University of Rochester.

Webster Montessori School
1310 Five Mile Line Road
Webster, NY 14580
(585) 347-0055
Gary Goodwin, Head of School, Gary.Goodwin@webstermontessori.org
    An AMI Montessori program.
Note from reader: Both our sons attended WMS. (Our 8yr old is finishing his third year in the elementary class this year). Montessori provides a balance of freedom within structure that allows each child to learn at his/her own pace. The mixed-age classrooms allow the younger children to learn from the older children and the older children relish their role as leaders in the classroom. The materials are beautiful, logical and self-correcting. The teachers are caring and professional. We love this school.

Webster Nursery School
59 South Ave
Webster, NY 14580
(585) 265-2430
Note from reader: As a mother of four beautiful children, being involved in their first educational experience is very important to me. Webster Nursery School is a not-for-profit cooperative preschool and has been in existence for over 40 years. The teacher is NYS certified and has been teaching at WNS for over 25 years. All my children have gone to WNS. My youngest child is currently in the 3-year program and just loves it. Being involved with WNS has given me the chance to watch my children grow socially and academically, so when it was time to start kindergarten, they were definitely ready. It has also given me the opportunity to meet new people, and because of that I have made many lifetime friends over the past few years.
Note from reader: It's a great cooperative nursery school taught by an accredited teacher who has been there for 27 years. Now former students are bringing their children in to Webster Nursery School where there are so many fond memories! Parents are very involved by volunteering in the classroom and running the school.
Note from reader: This school has provided a wonderful first experience in a formal school setting for my child. The first few days were a bit tearful, as they are for many 3-year-olds, however the teacher and other moms working in the classroom made him feel welcome and comfortable. By the third day of school, he was comfortable with his surroundings and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the school year. He's looking forward to being part of the four year class in the fall. Webster Nursery School has been educating children for over 50 years, retaining the same teacher for 30 years. That is an important factor in a field with a high rate of turn-over.

Webster Presbyterian Preschool
550 Webster Road
Webster, NY 145800
(585) 265-4481
Registrar: Amy Crumley
Note from reader: My second child is now attending this program (as did my first) and I cannot rave enough about it. The teachers are caring and involved. It is self-supporting, non-profit, professional program organized with its own board that also consists of parent-members. They provide stimulating and enjoyable experiences for the children. I have seen a huge change in my daughter since she began attending in the fall. She is more mature and social.

Wee Care Nursery School
Lima Baptist Church
1574 Rochester Street
Lima, NY 14485
(585) 624-7359
Notes from reader: We researched and visited a dozen different preschools before settling on this one. The teachers are SO tender and caring, you can almost tangibly feel the love there as soon as you enter...The distance from our home was about 20-25 minutes good weather, but the drive was well worth it. Erika was quite withdrawn in the beginning, but these wonderful teachers worked with her so gently that before we knew it, she transformed into this outgoing, eagerly participating girl. Academically, the things she was taught there were the same things my older daughter had learned in Kindergarten! Their school day is structured for optimal learning and playtime. We couldn't be happier with our total experience there and, all said and done, I would have driven twice that distance to have such a wonderful experience!

Wings Christian Preschool

Notes from reader: My daughter went there for two years and now my son goes as well, they have added more classes since the new building went up this past year. It is an awesome program, the teachers are very good and so kind. Deb Thompson is the head. They also have a little Wings program for younger kids to do with a parent or guardian.

Winton Road Nursery School
220 Winton Road South
Rochester, NY 14610
(585) 442-8340
Notes from reader: Winton Road Nursery School is a semi-cooperative nursery school for 2 - 5 year olds. The teachers are warm and loving and the parent community is wonderful. My child blossomed there. Scholarships are available.
And from another reader: Winton Road is a NAEYC-certified semi-cooperative school with programs for children ages 2-5. It's been in operation for 40 years! The school uses 4 separate rooms and has an attached playground; the teachers are alert and understanding, and the school focuses on socialization. My kids love it!

Wolk Children's Center at Jewish Community Center
Brighton, NY
Note from reader:The pre-school program begins at 2 yrs old and goes to 5 yrs old. My oldest loves it, this fall will be his 3rd year in the program. The teachers are great. They really love the kids.
Note from reader:Sending my daughter to the JCC provided and incredible place for both myself and my daughter to create a network of friends. The teachers are incredible! Warm, caring and very creative! The building itself is only about 2 years old and it is without question a state of the art facility. Classrooms have child sized bathrooms and sinks and water fountains. Every room has a fridge and a microwave too. It is a Jewish facility, but the population is very diverse.

Woodbury Preschool at Strong National Museum of Play
One Manhattan Square
Rochester, New York 14607
585-410-6303 or 585-263-2700
Note from reader:My son currently attends their program and it has been a great experience. He has grown in so many areas: self confidence, independence, comfort, and safety with others! The teachers are exceptional, nurturing, creative, and ever so patient! We are extremely happy with this experience, the community feeling with the museum and the exposure to play, fun, and learning.

Woodside Nursery School
570 Klem Rd
Webster, NY 14580-1541
(585) 671-6757
Notes from reader: This school has been in operation for over 100 yrs! It is a Co-Op school, so it is affordable. You do have to volunteer once or twice a month but it is a wonderful experience because you are not just helping out the school, but you also get to see how the school operates and to see how your child interacts with other children. This is my son's first year at the school, and he loves his teacher. I think this has been a great preparation for him for Kindergarten.I highly recommend this great school!

YMCA Monroe Ave
797 Monroe Avenue
Rochester, NY 14607
(585) 271-5320
Notes from reader: My kids go to the Monroe YMCA for preschool. We love it! They are a small program and generally don't advertise as they fill up so quickly by word of mouth. [They provide] a nice introduction to crafts, kids, teachers, snack, etc. The 3 teachers are wonderful and include a very creative, humerous, fun male teacher (dad of 3 kids), which is really a bonus. They have creative refreshing themes such as "Rainforest Month." Your child needs to be a member of the Y. It is reasonably priced, they always run around in the big gym each day, and older kids go swimming as part of school. I love my kids' experience here. It is socially focused, as most preschools seem to be.
